The Gig ‘n’ Grub Guide, December 2013

Sunday 3 November 2013, The Fat Cat Tap.

Don’t Spook the Horse market themselves as The Neil Young Tribute Band and this is certainly the case.  This is the latest time I have seen them and I am always so impressed by their sheer musicianship, this time playing to a packed Fat Cat Tap.

Firstly as a measure of ability the regular set list went out of the window which resulted in the first half of the performance being largely acoustic – notably and a real highlight being “Southern Pacific” with “Harvest Moon” as a runner-up.

In the second set the twin lead guitar magic started.  In no particular order “Southern Man”, “Powder Finger” and “Rocking in the Free World”.  The band played a marvelous rendition of “Like a Hurricane” which in my opinion rivals the spectacle of the orginal.

The Audience were hugely appreciative of the band’s efforts as indeed they should have been given the excellence of the music was greatly enhanced by the venue.  The Fat Cat Tap offers a massive range of ales, lagers and ciders all listed on a huge blackboard over the bar with a note on strength and character.  This venue offers an interesting range of locally produced bar snacks all served by attentive bar staff.

Argh… The set list went out the window was because I (Mark) forgot to bring the step down transformer for my amp. I guess that is a risk with using vintage american amps in the uk… Thankfully a member of the audience (thank you Karen!!!) went home and lugged in an amp for me to use in the second set.
